International workshop on the risks from diffuse pollution

The EU funded project 'integrated soil and water protection', SOWA, will hold a workshop on the risks from diffuse pollution in Prague, the Czech Republic, on 28 and 29 June.

Soil pollution and degradation is a result of population growth and technological development. Industrial development has left a legacy of environmental damage that continues to have an impact on natural resources, and ultimately, quality of life. A wide range of artificial chemicals designed for use in industry, agriculture, pest control, consumer goods, and emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels are the main sources for diffuse pollution.

Areas for future research, such as the physical-chemical multifunctionality of soils, will be discussed at the conference.

Industry workshop on new technologies for waste water treatment

As its closing event, the Fifth Framework Programme project METASEP is organising an industry information workshop in Saarbrücken, Germany, on 20 February 2004, to present its results.

In the course of the project, a new technology for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with toxic metals was developed, which is especially relevant for industries struggling with large amounts of wastewater streams containing toxic metal cations or their oxyanions (metal working, semiconductor and copper industries, mine water treatment etc.

The METASEP consortium has worked for the last two and a half years on the development of new bonding agents, membranes and separation processes to solve such problems and overcome the shortcomings of conventional treatment processes.
